A course in Smartcat translated from English to Arabic, with its images, videos and audio selected for translation and marked complete before it goes to the LMS

What is LMS translation?

LMS translation, or LMS content localization, turns the course files a learning management system runs, such as SCORM packages, XLIFF exports, subtitles and job aids, into every language your learners need without breaking navigation or tracking. Smartcat translates those files with AI and your glossary, routes each language to your reviewers and returns files your LMS already accepts.

LMS translation covers the course content you load into the LMS. The LMS’s own menus, buttons and notifications usually come from its language settings or language packs, which you switch on in the LMS itself. See how it fits into Smartcat for learning and development.

Why multilingual training stalls before it reaches the LMS

Your LMS can host every language. Getting each language into it is the slow part, because every approved change sends the course through the same manual steps again.

Before: every update by hand

× every language× every course× every update

With Smartcat: one hand-off to your LMS

Every language at once

Export

Pull the SCORM package or XLIFF out of the LMS or the authoring tool.

Upload what you have

Add the SCORM package or XLIFF export to Smartcat as it is.

Translate

Send the text to a vendor and wait for every language to come back.

Every language in one project

Smartcat AI translates every target language at once, with your glossary and translation memory.

Rebuild

Paste translations back into slides, quizzes, captions and media.

Nothing to paste back

Text, captions and media are translated inside the course, so quizzes and layouts stay as built.

Review

Chase reviewers in each region until every language is signed off.

Sign-off in one place

Regional reviewers approve their language in the browser, and the project shows where each language stands.

Re-upload

Load each version into the LMS and test tracking again.

One upload for your LMS

Export one package with every language. With Dynamic SCORM, later changes reach the course without a new upload.

  • Less LMS admin

Fewer uploads and fewer tests for every update.

  • Tracking keeps working

The package structure is written back unchanged, so scores and completions still report.

  • Regions stay in step

An approved change reaches every language in the same release.

How Smartcat fits into your LMS translation workflow

Smartcat works as the translation management system in front of your LMS. Export a course, translate and approve every language in Smartcat with one glossary and translation memory, then upload the returned files as you would the originals. Your LMS doesn’t change.

Smartcat translates the text inside each file and writes it back into the original structure, so translated files go into your LMS the same way the originals did. Run a quick check of each language in your LMS before a large rollout. More on packages: SCORM translation and eLearning translation.

How learners in one LMS get the right language

Learners reach their language in one of two ways: one multilingual course where they pick the language, or a separate course for each language. Which fits better depends on how your LMS assigns courses, shows language versions and reports completions.

One multilingual SCORM package

Smartcat can export every approved language of a translated course in one multilingual SCORM package.

What your LMS team gets

  • One course record instead of one per language
  • Suits courses that change often or run in many languages

Check how your LMS presents the language choice to learners before you roll it out widely.

One package per language

Some LMSs assign courses by region or need a separate completion report for each language, so each language gets its own course record.

  1. Translate the XLIFFOne file per language in Smartcat
  2. Re-import itInto your authoring tool
  3. Publish per languageOne course record each

Glossaries and translation memory keep the versions consistent.

What to check in an LMS with multi-language support

Multi-language support usually means an interface in several languages and room for several versions of a course. It doesn’t translate the courses themselves.

Check three things

  • Does it assign a version by the learner’s profile language?
  • How do language versions appear in the catalog?
  • Do completions roll up across languages for reporting?

Answers differ between LMSs, so test one translated course end to end before you load the full catalog.

Updating a course that is already live

Re-translate only the new or changed sections, and learners in every language get the same version. See how to update a course that is already live.

  1. Update the sourceIn Smartcat
  2. Re-translate changesOnly the new or changed sections
  3. Export the packageOne updated file
  4. Replace it in your LMSEvery language, same version

How to translate a course for your LMS

To translate a course for your LMS, export it as a SCORM package or XLIFF, upload it to Smartcat with its videos and job aids, translate it with your glossary, have reviewers approve each language, then upload the returned files to your LMS as you would the originals.

1

Export the course

Export the SCORM package from your LMS or authoring tool, or export XLIFF if your authoring tool supports it. Add the videos, subtitles and job aids that go with the course.

2

Upload it and choose languages

Upload everything to one Smartcat project and pick every target language. Smartcat detects the images, videos and attached PDFs inside a SCORM course, and you choose which to translate.

3

Translate with your terminology

The Content Translator Coworker translates the course with your glossary and translation memory, so product names and policy terms stay consistent across modules.

4

Review and approve each language

The Reviewer Coworker pre-reviews each language. Your trainers, in-country reviewers or Smartcat Marketplace linguists then check it in the browser, and nothing is exported until your team approves.

5

Download files your LMS accepts

Download the translated SCORM package, with every language in one file, or translated XLIFF to re-import into your authoring tool. Subtitles and documents come back in their original formats.

6

Upload and keep it current

Upload the files to your LMS as you would the originals. When the source changes, re-translate only the new or changed sections and replace the package.

Translation software for LMS course files

Smartcat translates the course file itself, not copied text, so you skip exporting strings, repackaging and rebuilding. Each file comes back in the format it arrived in, with every language approved by your reviewers.

“Our learning library was built in English, which meant our Quebec workforce and other markets couldn’t fully engage with the content in their preferred language as fast as the business was changing. With Smartcat’s AI coworkers, our teams now adapt that content across languages much faster, ensuring our North America region stays current and consistent instead of waiting weeks to catch up.”

What training teams say about Smartcat on G2

What LMS and L&D teams ask before they start

“Our LMS already manages training.”

Smartcat doesn’t replace your LMS; your LMS keeps delivering and tracking courses. The gap Smartcat closes is earlier, between a change to the source course and an approved version reaching the LMS in every language. Smartcat hands your LMS the file types it already imports.

“AI translation isn’t safe for regulated training.”

Smartcat keeps people in charge of regulated training. AI prepares each language, your subject-matter experts or Smartcat Marketplace linguists review it, and nothing is exported to your LMS until your team approves it.

“We already have a translation vendor.”

Your translation vendor can keep working, inside Smartcat. Invite its linguists or use Marketplace reviewers, and the file work around each update, from exporting to repackaging and routing reviews, moves into one workspace.

“Uploading every language is the real work.”

A multilingual SCORM package carries every language, so your LMS team uploads one file per course instead of one per language. When the course changes, only the new or changed sections are re-translated.

“We can’t re-test every language in the LMS.”

Smartcat keeps a SCORM package’s navigation and tracking settings, so language checks focus on the translated text. Start with one course and run a quick functional test in each language before the first large rollout, because translated text can run longer than the source.

“Our courses come from a different authoring tool.”

If your authoring tool exports XLIFF, Smartcat translates the file and you re-import and publish as usual; see course file translation. Packages exported from Articulate® Rise® are translated without the authoring files, and SCORM Studio does the same for courses published from iSpring Suite, Easygenerator, Adobe Captivate, Absorb Create and CEGID. Other authoring tools without an XLIFF export aren’t covered yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to translate courses for an LMS?

Translate the course files your LMS runs, not copied text, so layouts, quizzes and tracking survive. Smartcat works this way, but whichever tool you test, check four things: which SCORM versions and formats it accepts, whether reviewers approve each language before export, whether files return ready to upload, and whether updates re-translate only what changed.

Is there a free LMS translator?

Yes. Smartcat offers a free trial: 15 days and 15,000 Smartwords, with no credit card required. It is a trial, not a free plan, and it is enough to translate a real course package, subtitles or job aids, have your team review them and test the result in your LMS before you choose a plan. General-purpose translation tools usually work on copied text, not course packages.

Is machine translation accurate enough for LMS courses?

It depends on the content and on who checks it. 92% of words translated by Smartcat AI are accepted without a single human edit, and your glossary and translation memory keep course terms consistent. For compliance, safety or customer-facing training, keep a reviewer in the loop: the Reviewer Coworker pre-reviews each language and your experts approve it before anything goes to your LMS.

Is Smartcat an LMS?

No. Smartcat is a translation platform that works before your LMS: it translates and prepares course files, and your LMS keeps delivering, assigning and tracking training. If you’re choosing an LMS with multi-language support, check how it handles course language versions and interface language packs; Smartcat then supplies the translated courses.

What is a translation management system for LMS content?

A translation management system (TMS) for LMS content keeps every course’s translations, glossary, translation memory and reviewer approvals in one place, so an update doesn’t start from scratch. Smartcat is a TMS built for course files: it translates SCORM packages, XLIFF exports and subtitles, routes each language to reviewers and returns files your LMS imports.

What is LMS integration?

LMS integration connects a learning management system to other tools, such as HR systems or authoring tools, so courses and data move without manual steps. For multilingual training, Smartcat works before the LMS: it translates the course files your LMS imports, such as SCORM packages, XLIFF exports and subtitles, and returns them in the same format, ready to upload.

Can Smartcat translate my LMS’s interface?

Smartcat translates the courses and files you load into your LMS: SCORM packages, XLIFF exports, subtitles and job aids. The LMS’s own menus, buttons and notifications come from its language settings: in Canvas, each user picks a language in their account settings, and Moodle admins install language packs. Course titles and descriptions your team writes can be translated in Smartcat like any other text.

Do I need to change my LMS to use Smartcat?

No. Smartcat sits upstream of your LMS and hands it the same file types it imports today: SCORM packages, courses republished from XLIFF, subtitle files and PDF or PPTX job aids. You upload them the way you upload any course, so enrollments, tracking and reports stay as they are. Test one translated course in your LMS before you roll out every language.

How do learners see the right language in my LMS?

It depends on how the course is packaged. With one multilingual SCORM package, the course has a single record in your LMS and learners pick their language, so check how your LMS presents that choice. With one package per language, each language is its own course, and your LMS assigns it by region or by the learner’s profile language. Test one translated course end to end before you load the full catalog.

Is course content uploaded to Smartcat secure?

Yes. Smartcat is ISO 27001 certified and SOC 2 Type II compliant, encrypts content in transit and at rest, and isolates every workspace, with role-based access, SSO and audit trails on enterprise plans. Course files, internal procedures and compliance training are never used to train public AI models, and uploaded content is deleted or returned within 30 days of a written request. Details are on the Smartcat security page.

How is LMS course translation charged?

Smartcat charges by Smartwords, its single usage unit: one source word processed by an AI action, such as translation, uses one Smartword per target language. AI dubbing for course video uses 10 Smartwords per dubbed word, charged only when you download it. Plans include a Smartwords allowance shared by unlimited users, and 100%+ translation-memory matches are free on current plans. See plans and pricing.
