I started translating in 2005 when I was a teenager. I had a Brazilian forum about a Korean singer and most of the news we've got were in English. I translated all the English news we could find into Portuguese so our friends and visitors could read too. In 2009 I got into Languages course in college, thinking in becoming a literary translator since I really love to read. I translated short stories, ended up learning how to subtitle, all to family and friends. Late in 2015, I started my specialization in English - Portuguese translation where I've learned a lot about this amazing career. In 2016 I got my first paid jobs in translation and I've joined Babelcube, Coursera, and TedTalks to improve my skills. Today, I translate more technical texts than literature. But I can't say it isn't amazing. I've learned so many new things, and so much about myself in the process that I must say it is a win-win situation.

Smartcat Marketplace FAQ

AI or human translators: what is the best?
Both AI and human translators have their own strengths and weaknesses, and the choice between the two depends on various factors. AI translators, powered by machine learning and natural language processing algorithms, offer several advantages. They can process large volumes of text quickly and provide instant translations. They are also available 24/7 and can handle multiple languages simultaneously. AI translators are constantly improving and can be trained on vast amounts of data, making them more accurate over time. Additionally, they are cost-effective for simple and straightforward translations. On the other hand, human translators possess unique skills and capabilities that AI cannot fully replicate. They have a deep understanding of cultural nuances, idiomatic expressions, and context, which allows them to provide accurate and culturally appropriate translations. Human translators can adapt to complex or specialized content, such as legal or technical documents, where precision is crucial. They can also handle ambiguous or poorly written texts better than AI. In summary, AI translators are suitable for quick and simple translations, while human translators excel in delivering high-quality and nuanced translations, especially for complex or culturally sensitive content. The choice between the two depends on the specific requirements of the translation task and the desired level of accuracy and cultural understanding.

How does Smartcat AI translation work?
Smartcat AI translation works by utilizing a combination of machine learning algorithms and neural networks to automatically translate text from one language to another. Here is a simplified explanation of the process: 1. Training the AI: The AI model is trained using a large amount of bilingual data, including parallel texts and previously translated documents. This helps the AI learn the patterns and structures of different languages. 2. Preprocessing: Before translation, the text is preprocessed to remove any unnecessary elements, such as formatting tags or special characters. This ensures that the AI focuses on the actual content. 3. Sentence segmentation: The text is divided into individual sentences, as the AI translates one sentence at a time. This helps maintain context and improves translation accuracy. 4. Word alignment: The AI aligns the words in the source sentence with their corresponding words in the target language. This alignment helps the AI understand the relationships between words and phrases. 5. Neural network translation: The AI uses a neural network model, such as an encoder-decoder architecture, to generate the translation. The encoder processes the source sentence and converts it into a numerical representation, while the decoder generates the translated sentence based on this representation. 6. Post-processing: After translation, the text goes through post-processing steps to improve the quality. This may involve fixing grammar, adjusting word order, or applying language-specific rules. 7. Quality assessment: The translated text is evaluated using various metrics and quality checks to ensure accuracy and fluency. This helps identify any errors or areas that need improvement. 8. Continuous learning: The AI model is constantly updated and refined based on user feedback and new training data. This iterative process helps improve the translation quality over time. It's important to note that while AI translation has made significant advancements, it may still have limitations and may not always produce perfect translations. Human review and editing are often necessary to ensure the highest quality translations.
